About Jill Osborne

Jill Heidi Osborne MA, is the founder and president of the Interstitial Cystitis Network (ICN), one of the first and longest-running patient education and support organizations dedicated to interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), chronic pelvic pain, and related urologic conditions.

As both a patient and healthcare educator, Jill brings more than 30 years of firsthand and professional experience to the field of bladder and pelvic pain. Diagnosed with interstitial cystitis at age 32 after experiencing symptoms since childhood, she transformed her personal health journey into a lifelong mission to improve education, support, research, and treatment options for patients worldwide.

Since founding the ICN, Jill has helped educate and support tens of thousands of patients in more than 90 countries. She has authored hundreds of educational articles, patient guides, research summaries, and consumer health resources focused on interstitial cystitis, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, menopause, and related conditions.

Her work has been featured on television, radio, online media, and patient advocacy initiatives, and she has lectured for international medical organizations, including the International Continence Society. Jill is the creator of the IC101 Master Class, IC101 Diet Guide, IC101 Flare Guide, IC101 Pain Guide, and the IC101 Food App, evidence-based educational resources that help patients identify symptom triggers, understand treatment options, and develop individualized self-care strategies.

A strong advocate for patient-centered research, Jill has collaborated on and co-authored studies examining treatment effectiveness, medication safety, sexuality, menopause, healthcare costs, quality of life, and chronic pain management. Her recent survey of more than 2,500 patients documented a high prevalence of retinal disease among individuals exposed to pentosan polysulfate sodium (Elmiron®), contributing to ongoing efforts to improve patient safety and awareness of medication-related risks. She is also actively advocating for greater awareness of emerging research examining potential gastrointestinal complications associated with long-term pentosan exposure.

The Interstitial Cystitis Network has been independently evaluated in peer-reviewed academic research and identified as one of the highest-quality online resources for interstitial cystitis patient education. Studies conducted by researchers affiliated with Harvard Medical School and the University of London recognized the ICN for the quality, credibility, accuracy, and educational value of its content, establishing the organization as a trusted source of information for patients, clinicians, and researchers.

For many years, Jill served on review panels for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), working alongside physicians, scientists, and military representatives to evaluate research proposals seeking federal funding for interstitial cystitis and chronic pelvic pain research.

Jill holds a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacology and a Master's Degree in Psychology and was awarded a Presidential Fellowship during graduate school. Through the Interstitial Cystitis Network, she continues to advocate for evidence-based patient care, medication safety, research advancement, and improved quality of life for individuals living with bladder and pelvic pain disorders. Her work combines lived experience, scientific research, patient advocacy, and more than three decades of direct engagement with the IC community.

Why Social Media Isn’t As Safe For Health (and IC) Education As It Should Be

As the founder of the very first website built on IC, as well as the very first forum (the ICN Support Forum), I have strong thoughts on the state of IC support online today. In the earliest days, we viewed the internet as a marvelous way of bringing the world's best resources directly into the [...]

Why You Deserve Better Than One Size Fits All Recommendations

Interstitial cystitis / bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is one of the more confusing diagnoses in urology — not because doctors don't understand pain, but because "IC" isn't really one disease. It's an umbrella term for a set of symptoms (pelvic pain, urgency, frequency) that can arise from several different underlying mechanisms: bladder-wall abnormalities like [...]

New French IC/BPS Guidelines Recognize & Expand Upon Phenotyping

While we don’t hear much from France with respect to research, their new IC/BPS guidelines add yet more confirmation on the role of phenotypes and how they can be used to create an individualized treatment plan. They take a slightly different approach to the ESSIC and AUA guidelines, demonstrating that while we have clear [...]

Patients Call for an FDA Review of Elmiron®

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - September 1, 2026. Patient advocates are calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to formally reevaluate Elmiron® (pentosan polysulfate sodium, or PPS), or at minimum adopt stronger prescribing and monitoring requirements, citing a growing body of research linking long-term use of the drug to serious retinal and bowel complications. According [...]

The Curious Link Between Bladder Inflammation and Depression

Why, oh why, do some IC patients struggle with depression?? Certainly lack of consistent sleep could be a cause along with intense, persistent pain. Having a doctor tell you that you have an incurable disease (an outdated and incorrect conclusion) is certainly upsetting. But what if there was a physical reason for that depression? Researchers at Duke University [...]

Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy (PEMF) Gaining Traction in IC Clinics

Earlier this year, an IC patient contacted the ICN to rave about a new therapy she was receiving. Known as SofPulse, this FDA approved device delivers gentle pulses of electromagnetic therapy into various parts of the body, where it helps activate the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response. Dr. Ken Peters, Chairman of the urology department [...]

How to Get the Answers You Need—and The Care You Deserve

Making the Most of Your Doctor's Appointment If you've lived with IC/BPS for any length of time, you've probably left more than a few doctor's appointments frustrated and wondering if your doctor truly understood—or even cared—about what you were going through. Some doctors aren't particularly interested in IC/BPS. Others may rely on older approaches or [...]

Could It Be Something Else? A Guide to Conditions That Mimic IC/BPS

Why every diagnosis should begin by ruling out other causes of bladder pain, urgency, and frequency. Before a diagnosis of IC/BPS can be made, physicians should first rule out the many other conditions that can produce similar urinary symptoms. IC/BPS remains a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that other possible causes of bladder pain, urgency, [...]
